Parowan Gap

This is Parowan Gap.

This is why it is notable.  Thousand year old petroglyphs.

Some are thought to convey astrological information.

Whatever the messages, even if graffiti, they are intriguing.

                                                         And numerous......

This profile is particularly interesting.  The slit representing the "mouth"  is in a position so that in mid morning in the fall of the year, the figure "swallows" the sun and in the spring "spits out the sun."  Thus is represented the coming of winter and the return of warmth in the spring.  Pretty nifty messaging!

My imagination says that this must be the way the land looked to early settlers as they  followed a path left by earlier wagons.
